Werner Kohn

Louis Armstrong

Werner was born in Bamberg, Germany in 1940 and comes to Parish Gallery with over 100 photographs that date from 1959 to the present of jazz musicians that traveled to his area performing in the nearby clubs.  Seldom leaving his provincial town, he was able to capture an outstanding collection of world class jazz musicians without ever having to leave Germany.

Mr. Kohn had training as a photographer in his native town and later studied at the Folkwang School in Essen.  He has worked freelance for German and international publishers, magazines, and newspapers since 1968, providing photos for record sleeves, posters, postcards, and calendars.  Up to the present day he has shown in 570 exhibitions in 58 countries, as well as holding more than 100 solo exhibitions at home and aboard.  His works have been regularly included in renowned annual photo albums and have been awarded prizes in important contests.  In 1998 he received the city of Bamberg’s E.T.A. Hoffman-Prize.

Parish Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 6 pm; other hours by appointment.
