Todd Williams
“Think of a musical
composition - its lines and notes express movement, color, contrast,
space,
texture and time. Do you see it? The works in this show are visual
compositions that express all of the above and more.
It is all about seeing. Listen
carefully, can you see the music?”
Todd
Williams, a Savannah, Georgia native, was reared and educated
in
Harlem and Queens,
New York.
His artistic vision was honed at New York’s
School of
Visual Arts, where
he specialized in
fine art. His interpretations were large
public art - mainly works of sculpture in metal until the early 1980’s. Other works were formed from wood and
glass. His sculpture is installed in
schools and other municipal buildings in New York
and Mexico City. He has represented the United States in two international art
venues – Dakar, Senegal
and Mexico City.
By the
late 1980’s, Williams moved his work to a
multi-disciplined, two-dimensional and mixed-media orientation, using
wood, paper,
technical inks and acrylic paints. The
scope of these works moved inside and onto the walls of collectors and
corporations.
His
work has been displayed in group shows in Washington,
DC, Singapore,
New York City,
and as a part of the American
Academy of arts
traveling
exhibits, among many others. He has had
solo exhibits in Mexico
and New York City,
along with
this being his second solo exhibition at Parish Gallery.
Williams
has taught at the School
of Visual Arts, Brooklyn
College, Columbia
University, and Jamaica
Arts Center,
all of which are in New York. His teaching and art therapy has included
work with adults, children, and individuals with mental illness. Todd Williams moved to Washington in 1998.
