Stephaine Parrish Taylor

Ms.
Taylor, a widely exhibited quilt-maker has shown
across the United States and in South Africa. She
worked for three years managing a pan-African art
gallery in
Nairobi, Kenya, where she was introduced to traditional and
contemporary
African textiles. This current show
captures Stephanie’s memory and experience of a recent trip to northern
India.
Puja is the
ritualistic acknowledgement of a Hindu
God and Shaki the goddess of feminine creative power. “So my puja are the quilts. I seek to
create a tactile and visual language where the pattern of blocks, color
and
texture create metaphors. I use commonly
known block patterns and readily available fabrics to build upon the
quilting
tradition while speaking in a voice that is uniquely mine.”
A native of Sewickley,
PA, Stephanie is a graduate of
Kalamazoo College, the mother of two and works fulltime as a branch
manager at
a Vocational Rehabilitation Center in Portland, Oregon.
She comes from a long line of women skilled
in various and sundry needle arts. Her
work has been juried into regional, national and international shows
and is
included in both private and public collections.
