Sylvia Snowden

Ms. Snowden’s work has been described as powerful
and passionate with the use of vibrant color and tactile texture. She
successfully
utilizes the figure and non-figure as a subject with a keen sense of
design.
Through the
use of color the seasons – spring, summer, autumn, and winter are
symbolized. The elements of brushwork
and color present a pulsating rhythm that one associates with life and
growth. The painter renders the floral
subject matter which reminds one of bas relief sculpture.
The application of paint caresses the surface
which offers a feast for the eye and uplifts of the spirit.
When asked to give us an artist’s statement,
Ms. Snowden replied, “I do not believe in an artist’s statement because
it
seems to narrow the viewer’s reaction and direct him/her to draw
specific
limitations. In my work, I hope to evoke
stimulating responses.”
Ms. Snowden holds both a
Bachelor of Arts and a Master
of Fine Arts degree from Howard
University. She received a scholarship to Skowhegan
School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan,
ME and has a certificate from Le
Grande Chaumier, Paris,
France. She has taught at Howard University, Cornell
and Yale, has served as an artist-in-residence, a panelist, visiting
artist,
lecturer/instructor and curator in universities, galleries and art
schools both
in the United States and internationally.
Her exhibitions include, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Women’s
Museum, Montclair Art Museum,
Baltimore Museum of Art, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University,
