Joanne Kent

Parish Gallery is
pleased to present Joanne Kent, a painter,
in an exhibition entitled “Basso Continuo”. This exhibition will open with a
reception from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, October
16th and will run through November 10, 2009.
Joanne
Kent’s paintings are constructed with thick oil paint
and wax medium, creating a sculptural effect by the layering of these
materials. Kent’s monochromatic
palette ranges
from strong reds to deep earth tones.
Forms are minimal, with loosely applied thick horizontal lines,
dabs, or
grids. With a steady resonating pulse
such as basso continuo’s supporting rhythm, these works improvise with
color
nuances while remaining within a thematic structure.
This body of understated paintings has its particular
beautiful, yet rough personality, creating a powerful dialogue of
expression.
"My paintings are
made
up of many color variations but read as monochromatic.
The works are experiential, about the
intrinsic qualities of the materials, along with the interplay of
color,
texture, and form. The surface treatment
of heavily applied paint gives the works a charged physical presence
that resonates
within the space they inhabit.”
A native of Minnesota,
Joanne Kent has lived in Washington
for more than 30 years. She holds an MFA
degree from the University
of Minnesota. Her works have been shown in numerous solo
and group shows in the area and elsewhere.
