Alex Bay

It has been 10 years since Alex
Bay exhibited here at Parish
Gallery, the earlier exhibition was centered on a large installation
“Canaletto’s House” which was erected in the Canal
Square piazza.
He used technological means to express a profound nostalgia and
a
jaundiced view of modern life. His
present work omits technology, but is composed of works that have an
aura of
timelessness. Today he uses any material
or process, which will further communication: steel, fiberglass, wood,
fabric,
rubber, paint, paper, found objects and trash.
His tools are computers, video cameras, and electric arc welding
machines, as well as brushes, chisels and hammers.
Bay is largely self-taught and his work
evinces a tension between painting and sculpture and reflects a passion
for
materials and constructions.
Bay pairs abstract painting
with recessed sculptural constructions set in blackened cells. The three dimensional elements are crude
rusted steel or tin forms, and are intended to serve as foils for the
more
elegant paintings. The two are forms are
ying and yang.
Bay has shown in the Washington, DC
area for many years and is also
affiliated with the Caelum Gallery in Chelsea,
New York and the New Light Gallery
in Abingdon, VA.
He has exhibited in numerous exhibitions, both one man and group
shows
for over 20 years.
